You may have heard of it from Jon and Kate Plus 8 it’s called "monkey munch". You make it with:
9 cups Chex cereal (any variety)
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
•Put chex in a large bowl and put aside
•Place chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter into a quart-sized microwavable bowl
•Stir the ingredients together
•Microwave the mixture uncovered for a minute on "high." Stir the mix again and continue to zap in thirty second intervals until it mixes smoothly
•Add the vanilla and stir
•Put combination into a 2-gallon, Ziploc freezer bag.
•Add powdered sugar, seal the bag and shake until distributed.
•Spread Monkey Munch out on wax paper to cool and dry.•Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for storage.
My kiddos are 7 and 8 and they love their snacking! I like having variety for snacks to get them to try new foods, but also to expand their nutritious choices.
One of my favorite lunch and snack options is yogurt. When my kids were little they enjoyed Yoplait Kids. They liked it because it had Dora on it and tasted yummy. I like it because it’s 25% less sugar than the leading kids yogurt and has both calcium and vitamin D which are needed for growing bones and bodies. Now they even have varieties with Lightning McQueen and Cinderella on them! Do any of your kids like any of those characters?
With yogurt I sometimes will make smoothies too, which my kids think are fancy "milkshakes"! Here’s my basic recipe:
-Yoplait Greek Plain yogurt (17 grams of protein, excellent source of caclium and vitamin D)
-Frozen fruit (blueberries, cranberries, mango, etc.)
-Banana
-Little fruit juice (moisture/texture)
Other family favorites:
-cottage cheese and crackers
-hard boiled eggs and egg salad
-hummus and green/red pepper strips for dipping
-Cheerios, dried fruit, slivered almonds
-scrambled eggs, brown rice, veggie stir fry
-meatballs and spaghetti sauce for dipping
Now is a great time to introduce new foods when they are young! I’ve listed some of my favorite recipe websites below too!
